Congressman Mitchell to Serve On House Armed Services Committee

April 25, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10) released the following statement after his House Republican colleagues selected him to serve on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC):

“I am honored my colleagues selected me to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over our nation’s defense policy through its oversight of the Department of Defense and the United States armed forces. One of our government’s most important functions is to provide for the common defense, and I take this charge seriously. To preserve our security and peace in our increasingly dangerous world, we must provide our military with the resources necessary to respond to any threat.  That’s why I recently voted to fully fund the military at levels needed by the Pentagon and Secretary of Defense James Mattis, ensuring readiness, equipment maintenance, and other issues are remedied to restore our nation’s military capabilities.

Readiness also starts at home: seventy percent of everything a soldier shoots, drives, flies, wears, eats or communicates with is contracted in Michigan, and national security and defense industries support more than 105,000 Michigan jobs. The 10th District of Michigan is home to Selfridge Air National Guard Base (ANGB) which houses the 127th Wing – one of the most complex units in the Air Force - which maintains and flies the A-10 Thunderbolt and the KC-135T Stratotanker. In addition to the 127th, Selfridge is one of the nation’s busiest and most diverse military installations and serves as the home to more than 40 tenants, including components of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Customs & Border Protection. Additionally, nearly 3,000 full-time civilian and military personnel work at the base, in addition to 3,000 members of the Air and Army National Guard and other Reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces.

I look forward to working with my colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee to ensure our nation’s military is always ready and equipped to protect our nation and meet any challenge.”

HASC Chairman Mac Thornberry (TX-13): "I'm pleased to welcome Congressman Mitchell of Michigan's 10th Congressional District to the House Armed Services Committee. He is a strong advocate for his district and our brave men and women in uniform. I look forward to working with him to ensure our military is empowered to remain on the cutting edge of our fight against all threats with the resources, training, and equipment they need to succeed.”

Congressman Mitchell will fill the spot on HASC opened by the Senate’s confirmation of NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

Congressman Mitchell will now serve on the Armed Services Committee, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Oversight and Government Reform Committees.
