Mitchell Responds to Soo Locks and GLRI Funding Proposals
WASHINGTON – Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10) released the following statement this afternoon regarding the Soo Locks modernization project and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) in the president’s budget proposal.
“Seeing further funding for upgrades to the Soo Locks included in the Army Corps of Engineers’ budget proposal for next year is welcome news. Since coming to Congress, I have worked aggressively through my role on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to ensure the Army Corps understands the importance of this project, as any failure at the locks would have a devastating ripple effect on our nation’s economy and national security. Last year, the Army Corps provided initial funds for these upgrades, and these new funds demonstrate continued commitment from the Trump Administration to upgrading the Soo Locks. I will continue to do everything possible to move the project towards groundbreaking and completion to protect our economy and our nation.
While I am excited about Soo Locks funding, I am disappointed that once again the president’s proposal calls for greatly reduced funding to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Our Great Lakes are a national treasure, and the GLRI supports critical projects that improve water quality, combat invasive species, protect the Great Lakes ecosystem, and more. As I did in 2017 and 2018, I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fight for full funding of the GLRI.”
