Mitchell Statement on Ongoing Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Mitchell (MI-10) released the following statement about the ongoing government shutdown:

“The government shutdown is a direct result of Senate Democrats refusing to take ‘Yes’ for an answer or negotiate in good faith. Senate Democrats rejected a funding bill that would have kept the government open, and also once again rejected authorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, putting at risk the health care of 9 million children nationwide and nearly 90,000 in Michigan. Senate Democrats decided to play politics rather than addressing the hard issues head-on, which is not why the American people send their representatives to Washington.

“Prior to this shutdown, there were ongoing negotiations on immigration reform and border security, but instead of continuing those discussions Senate Democrats chose this path. Each hour this shutdown continues, our troops and national security are jeopardized, and domestic priorities are put on hold. I call on all Senate Democrats to stop these tactics and follow the lead of the House of Representatives in passing a bill to fund our government."
